THE PRACTICE

EEG (Electroencephalogram)

Sept. 26, 2016

The EEG, also known as an electroencephalogram, helps to diagnose neurological conditions by detecting the small electrical impulses given off by the brain. This simple and painless test can be completed in our lab or at home with a home monitor. This can help determine if someone is having seizures or other various conditions that may have resulted from a head injury, stroke or other traumas. For information, please discuss it with your doctor.

What is an Allergy?

An allergy is an overreaction of the immune system to an inappropriate stimulus, such as dust, pollen, grass, pet dander, mold, etc. The immune system believes it is being invaded by a parasite rather than a harmless allergen in the environment, and therefore it rallies its defenses to fight off the enemy.

Allergy Symptoms

The list of symptoms caused by allergies is longer than you might think. Primary signs of allergies include:

  • Runny or congested nose

  • Sneezing

  • Watery and itchy eyes

  • Asthma

  • Frequent ear infections

  • Sinus headaches

  • Nasal polyps

  • Conjunctivitis (eye irritation)

  • Muscle/joint pain

  • Skin rashes and eczema

  • Mental problems such as confusion, slow thinking, depression and forgetfulness

  • Respiratory effects including endless colds, chronic cough, recurrent bronchitis

Of course, there are many possible reasons for these symptoms. The only way to know if they are caused by allergies is to take an allergy test. TMG offers a pain-free skin test that provides answers in just 15-minutes.  For more info, please contact our office.

Sleep Study

Polysomnography, also called a sleep study, is a test used to diagnose sleep disorders. Polysomnography records your brain waves, the oxygen level in your blood, heart rate and breathing, as well as eye and leg movements during the study.

Polysomnography usually is done at a sleep disorders unit within a hospital or at a sleep center. You'll be asked to come to the sleep center in the evening for polysomnography so that the test can record your nighttime sleep patterns. Polysomnography is occasionally done during the day to accommodate shift workers who habitually sleep during the day.

In addition to helping diagnose sleep disorders, polysomnography may be used to help adjust your treatment plan if you've already been diagnosed with a sleep disorder
